Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Character Background: Reyson lives on the Tellius continent, a land dominated by two species of sentient beings: beorc, who are analogous to ordinary humans, and laguz, humanoid beings with animal characteristics who can transform into a more powerful animal-like form. There are beast, bird, and dragon laguz; Reyson belongs to the long-lived Heron clan of the Bird Tribes. Reyson is also a member of the Herons' royal family, although most of the Herons were killed in the massacre of Serenes Forest years ago.
Reyson grew up with his family and friends, including his little sister, Leanne, and his friend from the Raven tribe, Naesala. While he lived for a long time in the peace and beauty of the Serenes Forest in Begnion with his fellow Herons, this peace was shattered when his home was destroyed and his friends and family ruthlessly slaughtered by the beorc of Begnion, who wrongly blamed them for the death of Begnion's then-empress, Misaha.
Reyson escaped and made his way to Phoenicis, home of the Hawk clan, where he lived under the care of the Hawk King, Tibarn. It was in Phoenicis, embittered and angry, that Reyson nursed a deep grudge against the beorc. Surrounded by the much more physically powerful Hawks, he also came to long to be more like a Hawk himself -- especially Tibarn, the strongest of all of them. Frustrated with his frail body, Reyson even attempted to mimic the Hawk clan’s diet (raw meat, fish, insects) in an attempt to emulate his friends. He succeeded mostly in making himself violently ill.
Although convinced that beorc were vicious and not to be trusted, Reyson eventually reconsidered his stance after a paramilitary group led by Ike of the Greil Mercenaries rescued his younger sister, Leanne, whom he had previously given up for dead. When Empress Sanaki, Misaha's successor, personally begged him for forgiveness, he begrudgingly agreed to release her from culpability. As a sign of goodwill, Reyson and Leanne used the Galdr of Rebirth to restore Serenes Forest, which had all but withered away after the slaughter of the Herons.
To repay his debt to Ike, Reyson aided the Greil Mercenaries in the events of the Mad King's War, where he fought to prevent the King of Daein from engulfing the continent of Tellius in all-out war. Later, he became embroiled in the conflict between Begnion and the Laguz Alliance, after evidence came to light that it was not Ashnard of Daein who had ultimately been beyond the events of the Serenes Massacre, but the senators of Begnion. During this conflict, Reyson was reunited with his beorc allies from the Mad King’s War, including Ike and the Greil Mercenaries and the knights of Crimea. Reyson, along with his siblings Leanne and Rafiel, takes it upon himself to look after the Fire Emblem, a sinister artifact that is claimed to have the power to release a God of Destruction on the whole of Telius.
Reyson is one of the few remaining members of the Heron laguz clan (at first, he’s presumed to be the only remaining member), and is referred to as “The White Prince”, likely a reference to his wings and his status as a member of the Heron royal family. Due to his time spent with the Hawk clan and his wish for revenge for what was done to his family, Reyson has an extremely unusual personality for a Heron. He is defiant and strong-willed, although his body is rather frail, and his manner of speech is extremely direct compared to the graceful, demure demeanor of his older sibling, Rafiel (who he at one point refers to as "my dear, stupid brother"). Though most Herons are apparently content to accept their powerlessness over their own destinies, Reyson and his younger sister Leanne are constantly hungry to prove their worth as allies to the war effort.
Initially, Reyson was incensed with thoughts of revenge against beorc, specifically the beorc of Begnion, who had participated in the massacre of Serenes Forest. After a beorc nobleman tried to kidnap him, Reyson traveled alone to the ruins of Serenes, determined to use his clan’s seid magic to bring destruction upon his enemies. However, he was eventually talked down by Tibarn, and later befriended the beorc under the command of Ike of the Greil Mercenaries. Since then, he’s become more and more convinced that beorc and laguz will eventually be able to live together and eventually chooses to forgive the people of Begnion.
Reyson is determined to help out in battle, despite being unable to fight. Instead, he supports allied forces with his magic, often risking his own safety (Herons are extremely frail physically, and flying units like Reyson are also susceptible to archers and wind mages, who can pick them off from afar) to help the war effort. He practically idolizes Tibarn, but he also gets along well with Ike and Tanith of the Pegasus Knights of Begnion, both of whom come to recognize his value in battle.
Abilities/Special Powers:
As a member of the Heron clan, Reyson can transform into a large white heron, increasing his range of flight. In human form, Reyson can still fly, but his range is more limited.
Reyson cannot fight (at all, really -- he tried to punch someone once but broke his hand), but can perform the Seid magic unique to the Herons by singing songs called Galdr. In human form, he can affect one person at a time using Galdr; in transformed Heron form, he can affect all units in close proximity to him at the same time. He can use the following Galdr:
Vigor: Units feel energized and are able to continue fighting when they would otherwise be too tired.
Bliss: Raises an ally’s biorhythm to its highest point, improving skill, concentration, and the chance of getting off a lucky shot. Units affected by the Galdr of Bliss are more likely to dodge mortal blows and land critical hits.
Sorrow: Lowers an enemy’s biorhythm to its lowest point, weakening them and making them more prone to wander in their concentration or make mistakes. Units affected by the Galdr of Sorrow are more likely to receive mortal blows and die in battle.
Valor: Energizes transformable units, allowing them to retain their more powerful forms for additional periods of time.
Recovery: Fully recovers a unit’s health and ill status effects.
The following unique Galdr are also available to Reyson:
Galdr of Rebirth: A Galdr that usually requires two singers, although Reyson has been shown to be able to perform this alone, particularly in a calm, orderly environment. A healing Galdr that allows berserk or brainwashed units to awaken or return to their normal state. For example, Reyson has used this to return a berserk Dragon laguz to his human form. Reyson and Leanne have also used this to restore the Serenes Forest to life by performing the Galdr in front of a holy shrine.
Galdr of Release/Galdr of Slumber: This Galdr has been used to lull a powerful God of Chaos to sleep (Slumber), or release it from its seal (Release).
Galdr of Destruction: Apparently, an extremely powerful targeted destruction spell, but never used in-game. Reyson plans to use it to destroy the beorc of Begnion in one fell swoop. However, Reyson never uses this and is in fact forbidden to do so. Making use of this Galdr is forbidden to the Herons, who are by nature creatures of order and balance. This Galdr also requires the use of a holy altar to use.
Reyson has the following non-Galdr skills:
Canto: Singing Galdr or performing other actions during battle does not impede Reyson’s range of flight.
Blessing: Units in close proximity to Reyson are gradually healed over time.
Reyson has the ability to locate his friends and read others’ thoughts, but only if they are unguarded. These abilities are interfered with in the proximity of chaos and battle.
Third-Person Sample: "...I think we're lost," said Reyson. "I could have sworn we've passed this tree twice over."
Not that he could tell by their tracks; what had begun as a light snowfall was quickly building into something on a much larger scale. Their trail was being obscured as he spoke. Perhaps if Soren, the thin, snappish strategist that almost never left Ike's side, were here, he could come up with a clever plan to get them unlost. Or simply refer to one of his maps.
This going would be so much easier if he was a Hawk, easily capable of carrying a beorc around -- he would have done so from the outset, and they would have beat the bulk of the snowfall. But though his stamina was much improved from years of following Tibarn and the others on their flights, he doubted he could carry Ike for long. If at all.
But he could keep going if Ike could. He looked skyward, from which the snow was continuing to fall.
"I'll try and take a look from higher up. My eyes aren't as good as a Hawk's, but if there's a beorc settlement nearby, surely I'll be able to spot the lights." He shifted into Heron form and began to rise up into the air, beating his wings sharply to steady himself against the winter wind.
Ike shouted something about being careful; though Reyson couldn't form a reply in the common tongue in his changed form, he did let out a rasping cry as he made his way into the air. From higher up, he craned his neck, scanning for any signs of habitation nearby. Then he spotted it: a row of lights, faint but unmistakeably there. Surely it had to be firelight.
A gust of wind caught him unprepared, and he struggled to regain control of his descent. "That way," he said, pointing, when he finally made his way back to his starting point. "I think there's a village or town up ahead."
First-Person Sample: [Reyson looks calm, but grave. He's used to finding himself in danger, though this particular situation is not one with which he's familiar.]
I am Reyson of Serenes Forest. A long ways from home, as I understand is true for the rest of you. I'm no fighter, but I can use seid magic to aid my allies. And I can look after myself. Call on me, and I'll help you in any way I can.
In return, I'd like to ask any archers among you to refrain from shooting at me. I've had enough of that for a lifetime, thank you.
